Do you think the Bible teaches that being poor is spiritual?
Like many people, the media, perceive that as a Christian, one is to be poor to be spiritual…
But, i would have to disagree. It would seem that the Bible teaches otherwise.
But I want to know what you have learned on the subject of prosperity and poverty in the bible. Also if being poor is spiritual?
Suggestion by clusium1971
Yes.
Suggestion by Buddy R
No.
Being poor in spirit [humble] is spiritual. Being poor in finances is not spiritual or unspiritual.
Mat 5:3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Suggestion by Black Country Man
People that have a humble and lowly spirit are really considered christians, exacltly how Jesus lived. Wealth has nothing to do with spirituallity
This is a question for the spiritual cummunity?
I normally dont watch media. It makes me distressed often. So I was talking to a friend and sharing how planet needs more healing but my friend kept mentioning why is there still so much negativity, hate and violence around us. In other words trying to say that if we dont watch the media, these facts dont go away. So my question to all my spiritual brothers and sisters here is, how do you deal with these issues?
Thanks so much for helping. Peace, Love and Blessings!

Acceptance of reality is kinda important.
Suggestion by Captain “C” du CaLaCo
Watching media or not watching will do nothing to healing the planet or those who occupy it. Media in many cases promotes negativity, hatred, etc. I haven’t seen anything on TV in ages that would suggest to me this is the avenue for peace. Your friend is correct in that there is much hatred, etc on the planet earth. Talking about it or listening to others talk about it in the media does nothing to correct the issue. There is only one way to correct these things but humans are not know for Godly selfless living. we need to cut greed and selfishness and put more time toward healing each other. Quit being the I am person and start being I will help person. together we can do it.

Your friend is right. Sticking your head in the sand will not make the world’s problems go away. I think it’s important to stay on top of what’s happening in the world – especially today.
Here’s a portion of scripture that will hopefully encourage you:
Luke 21:7-31
“Teacher,” they asked, “when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are about to take place?”
He (Jesus) replied: “Watch out that you are not deceived. For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am he,’ and, ‘The time is near.’ Do not follow them. When you hear of wars and revolutions, do not be frightened. These things must happen first, but the end will not come right away.”
Then he said to them: “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven.
“But before all this, they will lay hands on you and persecute you. They will deliver you to synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors, and all on account of my name. This will result in your being witnesses to them. But make up your mind not to worry beforehand how you will defend yourselves. For I will give you words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict. You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers, relatives and friends, and they will put some of you to death. All men will hate you because of me. But not a hair of your head will perish. By standing firm you will gain life.
“When you see Jerusalem being surrounded by armies, you will know that its desolation is near. Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those in the city get out, and let those in the country not enter the city. For this is the time of punishment in fulfillment of all that has been written. How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! There will be great distress in the land and wrath against this people. They will fall by the sword and will be taken as prisoners to all the nations. Jerusalem will be trampled on by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.
“There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. Men will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken. At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”
He told them this parable: “Look at the fig tree and all the trees. When they sprout leaves, you can see for yourselves and know that summer is near. Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that the kingdom of God is near.”
~ This verse describes exactly what is beginning to happen today. So even though the world is a frightening place and growing that way more each day, we can rest assured that God is in control and nothing happens without His consent. Keep looking up!

Christians: Do you support Sylvia Browne or other spiritual mediums?
I know some Christians who are quite fond of Sylvia Browne, which is quite bizzare to me. I am an Atheist, and lately I have been going over the Bible – and why is it that some Christians turn to “spiritual mediums” when there is a Bible verse clearly stating this is wrong?
Leviticus 19:31
‘Do not turn to mediums or spiritists; do not seek them out to be defiled by them. I am the LORD your God.’
What is your opinion on spiritual mediums? Do you support them, or do you wish more knew about the rules God sets for them?
I feel if you are going to believe in the Bible, you should atleast take it literally, yes.
Obviously, as an Atheist, I do not take the Bible seriously. To myself, it is nothing more than mythology. But I know there are those who take it seriously, and I was asking for a Christian view on the question.
Suggestion by ministeringinlove
Christians or so-called Christians like Sylvia Browne because she uses Christian terminology like “Christ,” the “Father,” and the “Holy Spirit,” but strictly in a New Age fashion.
Suggestion by Shopgirl328
As a Christian i do not believe in Sylvia Brown or any other spiritual mediums. But, people believe what they want Christian or no Christian.
Suggestion by Viva Liberty ⊗gta IV gangsta⊗
Sorry to intrude, but Sylvia Browne is a Christian in a way, a gnostic Christian. So that’s why some Christians give her approval I think

No i do not believe in Sylvia Browne or other spiritual mediums. I dont entertain that at all.
yeah i know i sylvia borwn like on montel and people ask her questions if there is anone else occupying her house *like a gost i guess) and she says yes and she even says the names. some of the things she says i htink is cool and i dont really know if what she does is good or bad…maybe its just a gift from God and she is supposed to share it with the world.
I believe that some people have the gift of prophecy.
So by your quoting Leviticus, I guess you think it is acceptable to murder your kids for cursing you. Leviticus 20:9.
You take even one scripture literally, you must take them all literally.
Spiritual mediums, being used by humans is referred to as “necromancing” in the Bible. It is a form of witchcraft.
Ms. Browne, and others of her ilk might be considered a
“White Witch.”
But then even white witches are still witches. Though they use their power for supposed “good”, what they are really doing is calling upon the powers of darkness, and promoting it, rather than Jesus Christ.
Spirits hanging around people after death are restless, tormented spirits. Never a good thing.
how can someone call themselves a “gnostic Christian?”
just blows my mind away.
Jesus warns that in the last days even the elect will be deceived. Those who seek mediums and claim Jesus Lord is deceived. You cannot serve two masters.
Free Thinker, as a Christian, I do NOT support spiritualists or any of those who claim to “consult” with the dead. The Bible is against it and so am I. First of all, those voices spiritualists hear are not voices of loved ones, but the voices of treacherous demons impersonating loved ones and deceiving audiences. Second, it is IMPOSSIBLE to contact a dead loved one presently. They are gone. Dead. The Bible teaches that. How could you talk with them? God bless you Free Thinker.
young Christians will be confused about spirituality until they become full grown in Christ this is why sometimes they may say things that may be a little off.
Sylvia Browne has been proven to be a fraud over and over again by her consistent failures She hasn’t been right yet…but always comes up with some lame reason why
Helllllll nooooo… Sorry that outburst is beyond me but no I do not support Sylvia Browne..She is the epitamy of evil itself and I always turn the channel when I see her on Montel. I don’t want her to poison me with her false claims and words…
I don’t believe that she is of God. Which means she is getting her so called powers from the devil. She can call it whatever she wants, God knows the truth.
I pray God blesses you in your quest for knowledge. Keep reading the Bible, you will never go wrong.
Blessings!!!!
She comes up with some dangerous philosophies and religious ideas of her own. Go to her website and look at the religion she made up. It should dissuade any Christian from taking her seriously. I sincerely hope they don’t take her seriously or seek to be enlightened by her because it just wont happen. She told someones mother that her child was dead and in fact he was not.
Christians are not supposed to seek advice about future or past events from psychics or mediums or Tarot cards, horoscopes Ouija boards, or other means of contacting demons, and are not supposed to engage in other superstitions either.
She’s harmless. I wouldn’t seek her out, but I don’t really care what she does.
They use fear to make you watch. Fear cannot produce healing.
Watching the facts about the state of the world do not make it go away it will always be as it is. It is not a solution. In fact it promotes even more negativity.
The healing must take place with in ourselves first, a recognizing that we are to blame as well as our neighbor. The people need healing for healing to begin.

Dear Friend,
Stop watching and listening to the media and “listen” and obey the Word of God. God is a positive God. Not negative. Negativity comes form the evil one. Fill yourself with the Word of God (Health Food); not the Junk food of this world, ruled by Satan.
By being good to self and others we come across, rest leave it almighty or it takes care of itself once my goodness(vibrations) is released strongly, consistently and for long.
the world “out there” and the world around you is more related than we think.
i made the same choice: i gave my tv away, because i did not want to be attacked with all this rubbish anymore, all the advertisement, all the brainwash, all the exaggerated twisted news.
it might not change the wars, the suffering “out there”, but at least i take care of myself and my inner peace and stop adding more and more negative thoughts to the atmosphere of this planet by pondering on all the negative stuff.
this does not mean that i am looking away or deny the suffering, it simply is a self protective mechanism.
only through self peace will there be earth peace. there are people who suffer tremendously in this world, who have devastating lives and who need help.
and the people who have a good life, who live with enough food, health care and education should not add to this suffering in adding their negative feelings to it, but be aware enough to take care of their self peace and then they are able to help the ones in need.
but it does not help the needy if we grief about what is happening to them and talk about it. only a peaceful heart and mind can truly feel compassion for the one in need and help whenever and wherever it is needed.
You have to start at a point that will lead you to a goal and not from many points that will only confuse you…
Sufism is a mystical path. It is not mine but I have a great respect for it. The time has passed where people will routinely lock themselves away in a cave for individual contemplation. Experience has said that there are lessons to be learned not found in caves.
But there are many levels of involvement in the world. The stronger we are the more engaged we might be without harming our balance. There is no hard and fast rule. One seeker might read and watch all the news with great interest. Perhaps for them there is a clear separation that they can make between what they observe and the inner poise that they try to maintain. They can “turn it off.”
Another might follow a different wisdom and limit contacts with the outer world that disturb their inner poise. They say that it is not possible to ever, “turn it off.” For them it is like taking poison. Why should they fill themselves with what is harmful. For them wisdom dictates that they concentrate on their inner practices without interference.
So, you have to know what is your capacity and then you should not shy away from opportunities to increase your capacity while you maintain you inner course.
.
I remember that this is the . . . “storm before the calm”.
What else helps me personally and globally is . . .
…Viewing with compassionate eyes and heart.
…Remembering that authentic Love is stronger and more powerful than any negativitys or “evils”.
…Bringing forth authentic Love when accessing and veiwing situations, making choices, before reacting.
…Patience and “holding” to Spirit when tough moments come about.
..Have faith and trust the experience, the journey . . .Even though it’s not understood right at the moment.
…Don’t allow the “sour” or “evil” aspects of life to be believed that they’re more powerful or permanent than the Love and the Light of God.
…In relation to people. All beings are Light. Some beings are just more “veiled”, “shadowed” than others. Reflect Love to all.
You may not necessarily like or want to be around all persons, yet Love is reflected to all none the less.
Humor, patience, Love, more humor, compassion and more Love gets me through much in life.
.
We can try to alleviate some of the hate and negativity with a positive loving heart.
But we cannot stop all the drama and chaos that consumes the people of this world.
The very best we can do, is pray for others who suffer, stay focused on God and rise above it all.
This is what is asked of us, till the end of days…
I believe as all Christians believe, is that everyone, has the right to repentance. The spiritual community that believes in the God that is good and that gives Hope, Love, Compassion and Eternal Life don’t let the negativity reflect negatively in their hearts. Of course it’s distressing to hear and see hate and violence around us, it is only human to care, especially when one is with the Holy Spirit. I and many Christians deal with it with the grace of God to give them Hope, Love, and Compassion. If one has all that their wouldn’t be so much hate and violence.
( Those that commit hate and violence are goddless children in the world.)
May we learn to walk in the right ways of God, as his righteous servant and may none of us be disobedient and unbelieving, and stumble at the word.
GOD BLESS! AMEN! SHALOM!
You both are trying to change the world but you can only change yourself. I don’t know what your life was like in the past but I went through different things at different times. I wouldn’t want some do gooder to have stepped in to stop me from the time my husband lost his job. I am not at all upset about those kinds of things now, yet I understand the grief a person can go through. I learned so much. You both are judging others experiences. Of course, if you feel compelled to do something that is up to you. What if if was all perfect & complete without you thinking you had any control of it. I think you are saying that you thought if you didn’t focus on it, it would all stop. Just stay focused on what makes you happy. The world survived when it was much worst than it is now & those people lived to give birth to others & that is how we got here. We just have to focus on our own world. The whole big world is not that bad. If you found a good news paper & read only that you would think the world was so abundant in beauty, love, kindness, joy, great ideas, intelligent. This focus doesn’t make the other stuff disappear. It only makes it not appear in your life. If you go to a theatre with 16 different movies playing & you go into the nicest movie you have ever seen & walk out & see the people on one side or the stadium were watching the chainsaw murders & the otherside some other horrible story that is what they choice to experience. It is none of our business anymore than they should think we shouldn’d see are nice, probably unrealistic movie to them.
I agree with Phae that when we have gone beyond fear ourselves, then we can demonstrate peace to others. But we can also help others realize their perfection. When you see situations, ask for the divine solution to be shown to you. Your agreement with that, first, that it exists, second, the images we get are the firm part of hope, will help fulfill it and if anything comes to you to do about it, follow through.Miracles come in seeing, and communicating. All minds are connected.
There is a lot of negative energy out there. I don’t watch the media either, I can see it when I leave the house.
The answer is not with others but with me. Peace must begin with me, it can not begin anywhere else. Just imagine, if each individual found this Peace within there would not be any outer hate, anger, or violence.
How can I work toward world peace if I have no internal peace & can’t get along with my neighbor.
Just my understanding.
Blessings!
I’m aware that such things happen. When I can I do something about it.
That may be at work (I work for a medical charity), through what I buy (such as fairly traded goods, or local in season produce), where I shop (there is a good cooperative near me) or by giving money to good causes. I walk to work rather than drive, holiday abroad infrequently and try not to waste resources.
I tend to look on the bright side of life and encourage others to do likewise. When that isn’t possible I provide what support I can.
But in the end I recognise that I am but one person. I do what I can and when I can’t then I try not to let that dampen my enthusiasm for life and for the wonders of the world around me. That’s it really.
.
No. Abraham was extremely wealthy, but He believed in God. There were many others in the Old Testament who followed God closely in spite of their material wealth.
But most people who are wealthy tend to put their faith in their own riches rather than in God. Poor people are more likely to recognize their need for God to carry them through to another day.
The new testament does, the old testament doesn’t.
First I would like to note, that the Bible is not talking about actual physical actions or states, or even actual characters.
Everything has to be understood allegorically.
We naturally have a desire to receive pleasure, and especially to receive it only for ourselves.
On our correction path to get closer to God we have to change this direction of the desire from “for ourselves” to the direction “for others”.
So that is what it means to be poor, that we do not want to receive things for ourselves but we want to receive for the sake of others.
It does not necessarily translate to the physical world meaning that we have to live on water and bread only, it is more about our thoughts about our intention.
Whatever we do in action we have to have this overriding intention, that we do thing for the others.
I know it is a difficult and complex matter.
Here is a short video explaining the same concept.

3 John 2
Beloved I wish a bove all things that you may prosper and be in health even as your soul prospers
No. It is recognizing that you are “poor in spirit” lacking in spiritual things and searching and studying or reading to get them. Matthew 5:3 KJV.
3Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
As far as money goes, it is not having money, but the love of money that is wrong.
1 Timothy 6: KJV
9But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.
10For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
Some religions pervert this to fleece their flocks for every dime or penny or nickel they can get out of them. It is a false idea from the Bible. A number of religions play on it.
Debbie debbiepittman@yahoo.com
The Bible mentions that it’s easier for a camel to fit through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter into heaven. And it also says blessed are the poor and woe to the rich for they have already received their comfort on earth. It seems to me that being rich (which is difficult to define) is not a good thing for one’s salvation. The Bible also talks about giving out of your need. The woman who gave her two coins gave more than people who gave way more than that because she gave everything she had.
I think the Bible teaches that we can be content with less than we think and that chasing after riches that rust destroys and will not last, is a fruitless pursuit. That it’s best to seek spiritual riches that will last for eternity.
I don’t think it’s necessary to be poor as in not meeting your needs or going without necessities or even buying yourself things you like to have. I just get the impression that being rich isn’t the best thing for a Christian to be.
The Beatitudes talk about that specifically, but the answer to your question depends on whether you’re reading Matthew or Luke.
Luke says “Blessed are the poor, for they shall inherit the Earth.”
Matthew says “Blessed are the poor in spirit…”
You’ll find people who believe both. Just look at the Franciscan monks. They take a vow of poverty.
Considering that the likes of Job, Abraham and Solomon were filthy rich and God commands us leave an inheritance to our children (with a double portion going to the first-born male) I hardly think God intended us to be poor. He also commands us to help the widows and orphans. And He promises to richly bless us when we give our tithes and offerings with a cheerful heart. But in every instance we are to live our lives in humility.
Being poor is a blessing from our Lord. Being rich can be a curse because riches can very easily corrupt anybody. Very few rich people will enter heaven.
To Him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honor and glory for ever and ever. Jesus Christ is Lord.
I have a lot of friends who have served missions in third world countries, they report that the people are humble and it’s amazing what happens when they accept the gospel. I served a mission among a very rich chinese (mostly atheist) population and found that when people accepted the gospel they found meaning that all their money hadn’t given them.
I believe that wealth affects your spirituality depending on what you do with it, rather than on whether you have it. It’s hard to be spiritual when you don’t have enough to eat. It’s hard to be spiritual when you have so much money to buy toys with.
Yes,almost all religions teach that excessive material possesions stand in the way of spirituality.
Prosperity has nothing to do with spirituality other than as the scriptures say” it is harder for a rich man to gain entry into heaven than for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle”. Often riches can generate an independence thus removing the relying on the Lord.
Another passage comes to mind, ” what shall it profit a man if he were to gain the whole world but lose his soul”.
To me, the Bible is teaching, that spiritual richness is more important than being rich. I do not think that its telling people they have to be poor. Think about when the Bible was written, most of the population grew what they ate, made what they sold, and the Royals and their courts were basically the only real rich around, that didnt share or play well with others. Thier rich could be like owning 20 cows. Thier poor could be, they had no cows! It doesnt translate well into todays real world. I also believe it is teaching that if you are poor, not to desire what others have. Dont waste time on that, be satisfied with what you have.
The Bible clearly teaches that the love of money is the root of evil. The Bible also teaches that the poor in spirit will be blessed. But I don’t remember any verses that specifically say a person has to be financially poor in order to be spiritually correct….Blessings!
Well, it has been a long time since I read the bible, but…
Being poor can be an excellent way to learn to appreciate the simple things in life.
What the bible says over and over is to be happy with the state you are in. It also promises that God will take care of all our needs, every single of of them.
To be poor doesn’t make one holy; to sit around all day wishing you were rich makes one very unhappy.
As is, being rich doesn’t make you happy, but spending all your time chasing after the stuff doesn’t make a person happy either.
Money is a tool; use it wisely and don’t let it use you.
The Bible says that the poor will be blessed. it also says that “it is harder for a rich man to enter into heaven, than for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle”. now obviously jesus was being funny here, but the point is that very few rich people are saved, because their love of money causes them to believe that they don’t need Jesus.
It would depend on your situation and where God leads and calls you. (“Some” do it out of pity and recognition.)
A man asked Jesus, ” What can I do to enter heaven?” Jesus said, “Give up everything you own to the poor and follow me’.
You can pick an choose if you are well off….but of ALL the issues in the Bible, there is NO OTHER issue that is mentioned more often than poverty….not only in your own poverty, but also in how you treat others in poverty…..not by telling them about your religion, but by feeding and caring for them.
I think the bible teachers that IF you are poor you can be spiritual
But people blessed with proseperity who have an open heart and share their “riches” with the poor are also spiritual.
I’ve learned God blesses those who are impoverished, but they need have faith.
God does not turn away against those who prosper, but expects more out of them because they have more to offer.
That is my interpretation and I hope I helped you.
I think that both the poor and the rich can be spiritual, it is just that the rich have a harder time doing it. Jesus was very poor and He is the supreme example, but there were others who weren’t poor who had a solid spiritual life such as Abraham and who can forget Job?
No, But i can tell you that when you have nohing its easyer to see God. I lost everything and thats when i could see God. You notice he provides for everything, Even when you have nothing.
Jesus himself teaches it. Maybe you need to go back and read your Bible. Remember, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Why? Because a camel has to empty itself of all its possessions in order to pass through it.
If the Bible says things that sound like having less stuff is more spiritual (aka being poor) it’s just telling you that you shouldn’t love and get attached to material possessions.
